Margaux Grand Cru Classé en 1855 Château d’Issan 1993
This 1993 red wine comes from Château d'Issan, a historic estate located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France. Situated on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, Bordeaux is globally recognized for its historic wine trade and the legendary 1855 classification. Margaux, positioned in the southern part of the Médoc, is celebrated for its elegant, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blends that often include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The 1993 vintage in this region is characterized as light and classic.
Château d'Issan boasts a rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The estate is documented as early as 1152, the year its wine was famously served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England. This event linked parts of Southwest France to the English crown and laid the foundation for the English-speaking wine trade in Bordeaux. The current Renaissance-style castle, surrounded by an iconic moat, was constructed in 1644 and remains one of the most photographed landmarks in Margaux. The estate proudly carries the motto "Regum Mensis Aris Que Deorum."
In the historic 1855 classification, Château d'Issan was ranked as a Grand Cru Classé, specifically a Third Growth (3e Cru Classé). The estate's 30 hectares of vineyards are located directly within the Margaux village. The Cruse family acquired the property in 1945 and managed it independently until forming a partnership with the Lorenzetti family in 2012. Today, the estate is jointly owned by Jacky Lorenzetti and the Cruse family, with operations overseen by Emmanuel Cruse and Jonathan Ducourt. This 1993 vintage was bottled directly at the château and contains 12% alcohol by volume.
