Margaux Château Montbrun / J. Lebègue et Cie 1959
Château Montbrun is a historic wine estate located in Cantenac within the Gironde department, forming part of the renowned Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, France. The property has long been closely tied to the Lebègue family of wine merchants, whose name frequently appears on older labels. The story of J. Lebègue & Cie in Cantenac truly gained momentum in 1870 when Jules Lebègue returned to Bordeaux to expand his family's wine business. Here, he met Jules Jadouin, who had operated as a négociant in Cantenac since 1828. Lebègue married Jadouin's daughter, Marthe, and the couple settled at Château Montbrun. The father-in-law's business subsequently transitioned to the name Jules Lebègue, establishing the family as a prominent figure in the Médoc with an extensive export trade.
Situated on the Atlantic coast, Bordeaux is the world's most famous wine region, having exported wine since the Middle Ages. The legendary 1855 classification still ranks the area's leading châteaux today. Margaux, located in the southern part of the Médoc, is one of Bordeaux's most celebrated commune appellations, widely recognized for its finesse and as the home of Château Margaux. The 1959 vintage from this area achieved a score of 96 points and is described as full-bodied, rich, and legendary. This Grand Vin is produced under the official Appellation Margaux Contrôlée and has historically held the classification of Cru Bourgeois.
As is traditional for the Left Bank of the Gironde, where gravel soils prevail, the wine is crafted from a classic Bordeaux blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. This grape is one of the world's most renowned varieties for structured red wines and is typically cultivated in regions like Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany. The blend is complemented by Merlot, a classic variety frequently grown in Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy. Additionally, the composition includes Cabernet Franc, typically found in the Loire, Bordeaux, and California, as well as Petit Verdot, a powerful grape often utilized to add color and structure, commonly grown in Bordeaux, California, and Spain. This specific bottle was imported to Denmark by Kjær & Sommerfeldt A/S, a distinguished wine merchant holding the title of Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court.
