Médoc Cru Bourgeois Château Potensac 1997
Château Potensac is located near Ordonnac in the northern part of the Médoc peninsula, slightly apart from the most prestigious appellations. The estate is part of Domaines Delon, the same family that owns Château Léoville-Las-Cases, one of the absolute best 2e Cru Classés in Saint-Julien. This connection means that Château Potensac is managed with a level of quality ambition and expertise that is highly unusual for a generic Médoc estate without a classification. Thanks to the involvement of the Delon family, the producer is widely recognized for delivering on a level that far exceeds the ordinary expectations of the appellation.
The wine originates from Bordeaux, the world-renowned wine region situated by the Atlantic coast, which has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages and is still defined by the legendary 1855 classification. Specifically, it comes from the Médoc area on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Here, the soils consist of gravel, sand, and clay, which provide excellent drainage and heat retention. The 1997 vintage in this area received a score of 83 points and is characterized as light and fruity.
This 1997 red wine holds the classification of Cru Bourgeois and Appellation Médoc Contrôlée. It is crafted as a classic Médoc blend consisting of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. In Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon traditionally dominates the gravelly soils of the left bank, while Merlot and Cabernet Franc are more prominent on the right bank. The wine has an alcohol content of 12.5% and was bottled directly at the estate.
