Mercurey Château Philippe-le-Hardi 1992
The 1992 Mercurey from Château Philippe-le-Hardi is a French white wine classified under the Appellation Mercurey Contrôlée. The estate is situated in Santenay, the southernmost village on the famous golden slope of Burgundy. This wine is estate-bottled, with the grapes harvested directly from the castle's own vineyards in the Côte Chalonnaise.
Burgundy, located in eastern France, was historically shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the area's countless terroirs, creating a fine-meshed system of climats. Within this renowned region lies Mercurey, situated in the northern part of the Côte Chalonnaise between Rully and Givry. It stands as the largest village appellation in the area in terms of both size and production. The vineyards are planted on clay-limestone and marl soils, positioned on slopes at altitudes ranging from 230 to 350 meters. The 1992 vintage in this area is described as thin and weak.
The wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay, one of the world's most recognized green grapes, which is prominently cultivated in classic regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, California, and Oregon. While Mercurey is primarily known as the most serious and highest-producing Pinot Noir appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, a white Mercurey is a rarity, as only a very small number of hectares in the area are planted with Chardonnay vines.
