Stellenbosch Fleur du Cap 1997
The 1997 Fleur du Cap is a red wine produced from the Merlot grape. This vintage was produced, matured, and bottled at The Bergkelder in Stellenbosch, South Africa. As part of the production process, the wine was matured in small oak casks, and it holds the official Wine of Origin classification for the Coastal Region.
Merlot is a classic blue grape variety. While it is frequently cultivated in prominent wine areas such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy, it is also grown in the South African terroir.
Stellenbosch is widely regarded as the heart of the South African wine industry, with a viticultural history that dates back to the late 1600s. Located in the Western Cape province approximately 50 kilometers east of Cape Town, the landscape is defined by valleys and rolling hills bordered by the Simonsberg, Helderberg, and Stellenbosch mountain ranges. This topography creates a wide variety of microclimates. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. A strong maritime influence from the nearby False Bay provides cool sea breezes that moderate vineyard temperatures throughout the growing season. The soils are highly varied, featuring decomposed granite on the mountain slopes for optimal drainage, alongside sandstone and clay-rich soils in the valleys.
