Western Cape Savanha 2005
The 2005 Western Cape Savanha is a red wine produced by Savanha in South Africa. Crafted exclusively from Merlot, a classic dark grape variety traditionally associated with regions like Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy, this wine represents the South African expression of the varietal. During its production, the wine undergoes a gentle filtration process, which means that a natural sediment may occur in the bottle. It is bottled at 14.5% alcohol by volume.
The wine originates from the Western Cape, the overarching Geographical Unit that forms the heart of South African wine production. This expansive province encompasses renowned districts such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, and Constantia, stretching from the coastal areas around Cape Town northwards to the Olifants River and eastwards to Mossel Bay. The region features a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and damp winters. The vineyards are significantly influenced by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, particularly the cold Benguela current and the cooling Cape Doctor winds, which moderate the summer heat.
The dramatic mountain ranges and valleys of the Western Cape create an extremely diverse terroir. The soils vary greatly, consisting of ancient decomposed granite, sandstone, shale, limestone, and clay. While the province is globally recognized for having the largest plantings of Chenin Blanc, it also cultivates a wide spectrum of other varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and the native crossing Pinotage. This diversity allows the Western Cape to produce a broad range of wine styles, reflecting its rich viticultural history that dates back to 1685.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Western Cape
The Western Cape is South Africa's most important wine province and covers virtually all of the country's quality wine production under the overarching Wine of Origin (WO) Western Cape designation. The area stretches from Cape Town and is home to districts such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Constantia, Swartland, Walker Bay, Elgin, Hemel-en-Aarde, Robertson, Olifants River and Cederberg.
The climate is Mediterranean with warm dry summers and humid winters, moderated by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans as well as cool sea winds such as the Cape Doctor. The soils range from granite and shale to sandstone, limestone and clay. Chenin Blanc is the province's signature grape and represents the world's largest planting of the variety, with significant areas of old bush vines, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and the South African crossing Pinotage (Pinot Noir × Cinsault), as well as cool-climate Pinot Noir from Walker Bay and Elgin. The style ranges from fresh, mineral whites with citrus, peach, apple, tropical fruit and honey, to full-bodied reds with ripe dark berries, spices, smoky character and firm tannins. The area is known as South Africa's wine heart, with traditions dating back to 1685, and home to the classic dessert wine Vin de Constance from Constantia.
