Medal Tupungato Valley Trapiche 1997
The 1997 Medalla Merlot is crafted by Bodegas Trapiche, a historic Argentine producer established in 1883. The Medalla line was originally introduced in 1983 to commemorate the estate's centenary, representing a selection of their most outstanding parcels. This vintage is made entirely from Merlot, a classic blue grape variety traditionally associated with regions like Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy, which has found a unique expression in the high-altitude vineyards of Argentina.
The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Tupungato Valley, a prominent sub-region located in the northern part of the Uco Valley within Mendoza. Situated at the foot of the Andes Mountains and named after the towering 6,570-meter Tupungato volcano, the valley is home to some of Mendoza's highest vineyards, sitting between 900 and 1,500 meters above sea level. Mendoza itself is the heartland of Argentine wine production, where the sunny highland climate and cool nights contribute to the concentration and freshness of the grapes.
The Tupungato Valley features a dry, continental climate with very limited rainfall, making irrigation with mountain meltwater essential for viticulture. The extreme altitude results in significant temperature fluctuations between warm, sunny days and cool nights. The vines are planted in alluvial soils consisting of a top layer of sand and clay over a subsoil rich in limestone and rounded stones. Following the harvest from these carefully selected parcels, the wine was aged for 14 months in small new oak barrels before being bottled at 14% alcohol.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Mendoza
Mendoza at the foot of the Andes is Argentina's wine heart and accounts for the majority of the country's production. At high altitude, where meltwater from the mountains irrigates the fields, Malbec thrives above all. The grape produces deep, velvety red wines with ripe dark berries, plum and violets. The sunny highland climate and cool nights give colour, concentration and freshness.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
