Montagne-Saint-Émilion Château La Courolle 1989
This red wine is a 1989 Château La Courolle, classified as a Grand Vin de Bordeaux. It was estate bottled by the proprietor, Claude Guimberteau. The 1989 vintage achieved a score of 96 points and is described as full-bodied and concentrated.
The wine originates from Montagne-Saint-Émilion, an AOC located on the right bank of Bordeaux in the Libournais district, immediately north of Saint-Émilion. It is the largest of the four Saint-Émilion satellites. The area features a hilly terrain with clay-limestone soils on the ridges, gravel and sand on the slopes, and sections of limestone bedrock. The oceanic climate is moderated by the waters of the Dordogne river, providing mild temperatures and a certain level of humidity. Wines from this appellation are exclusively red and are dominated by Merlot, which thrives on the cool clay-limestone soils, supplemented by Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Montagne-Saint-Émilion is considered the most ambitious of the satellites, known for producing structured, Merlot-based Bordeaux wines.
Bordeaux, situated by the Atlantic Ocean, is the world's most famous wine region and has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. While the left bank of the Gironde is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon on gravel soils, the right bank is the domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This specific wine holds the Appellation Montagne Saint-Émilion Contrôlée and contains 12% alcohol in a 75 cl bottle.
