Château des Jacques Moulin-à-Vent Maison Louis Jadot 1998
The 1998 Château des Jacques Moulin-à-Vent is an Appellation Contrôlée red wine produced by Maison Louis Jadot. The wine was harvested, vinified, aged, and bottled by the house under the Domaine Louis Jadot and Château des Jacques brand.
Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot in Beaune, Maison Louis Jadot has grown over more than a century and a half into one of Burgundy's largest and most renowned wine houses. With 240 hectares of land, the estate is one of the largest private landowners in Burgundy, managing a portfolio of 154 different cuvées. Since 1985, the house has been under American ownership by the Kobrand Corporation through the Rainer family. The estate maintains a classic Côte d'Or approach with a strong emphasis on sustainability and terroir. During the 1998 vintage, the winemaking was directed by Jacques Lardière, who oversaw production from 1970 to 2012.
The wine originates from Moulin-à-Vent, located in the northern part of the Beaujolais region south of Burgundy. Spanning the communes of Chénas and Romanèche-Thorins, the area is named after a 300-year-old windmill that still stands on the hill above the vineyards. Often referred to as the "King of Beaujolais," Moulin-à-Vent is recognized as the most structured of the ten Beaujolais Crus. The vineyards are situated on pink granite soils with an unusually high concentration of manganese, which naturally lowers yields and produces highly concentrated grapes, resulting in an atypical Beaujolais style.
This cuvée is made entirely from Gamay, a French grape variety that has its historical homeland in Beaujolais and is also frequently found in the Loire Valley. The granite subsoil of the region provides an ideal foundation for cultivating this specific variety.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
