Vino Etrusco Parrina La Parrina 1976
Produced by La Parrina, the 1976 "Vino Etrusco" is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wine from the Maremma area in southern Tuscany. The estate is owned by Proprietà Marchesi Spinola Giuntini, and this specific wine was bottled at the origin.
Tuscany is an iconic wine region with winemaking roots dating back to the Etruscans. Within this renowned region lies Parrina, a small coastal appellation centered around the municipality of Orbetello in the Grosseto province. Granted DOC status in 1971, it is one of Italy's smallest DOC zones. Historically, production here has been heavily dominated by a single estate, Antica Fattoria La Parrina, which shares its name with the appellation.
The 1976 vintage is described as warm and ripe, achieving a score of 84 points. These vintage characteristics reflect the local geography, which is defined by its proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The area benefits from a mild Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cooling coastal breezes. Together with mineral-rich soils, this creates highly favorable conditions for viticulture in the hilly coastal landscape.
The Parrina DOC encompasses the production of red, white, and rosé wines, as well as the traditional dessert wine Vin Santo. While Tuscany is globally recognized for Sangiovese, which forms the primary base for the local red wines alongside international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the appellation's white wines are typically based on Trebbiano Toscano and the local Ansonica grape, often supplemented with Chardonnay.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
