Baron Nathaniel Pauillac Baron Philippe de Rothschild 1998
The 1998 Baron Nathaniel Pauillac is a red wine from the prestigious Pauillac appellation in the Haut-Médoc area of Bordeaux, France. Situated on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, Pauillac is renowned for its gravelly soils and serves as a benchmark for Bordeaux, housing three of the five First Growths from the historic 1855 classification. The 1855 classification still ranks the leading châteaux of this world-famous region, which has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. The 1998 vintage in this area is described as rich and ripe, achieving a score of 90 points.
This wine is part of the "L'Art de L'Assemblage" collection and is crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most recognized blue grapes for structured red wines. While Cabernet Sauvignon is frequently grown in regions like California, Washington, and Tuscany, it dominates the blends on the gravel soils of the Bordeaux left bank. The grapes for this wine are grown on exceptional soil, and the wine is subsequently matured in oak barrels in the cellars of the family company.
The wine is produced by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a company formed in 1933. Philippe de Rothschild initiated a modernization process that ultimately led to Château Mouton Rothschild being elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973, marking the only change ever made to the 1855 classification. The company's anchor properties are all located in Pauillac, forming one of the most cohesive family empires on the left bank. This specific wine was created by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild as a tribute to Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild (1812-1870). An English member of the family and a great patron of the arts, it was Baron Nathaniel who purchased Château Brane Mouton in 1853 and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. The Rothschild family has also expanded French wine expertise internationally, establishing renowned partnerships such as Opus One in Napa Valley and Almaviva in Chile.
