Pauillac Grand Cru Classé Château Haut-Bages Libéral 1983
Bordeaux, located on the Atlantic coast, is a historic wine region that has been exporting since the Middle Ages. Within the Haut Médoc lies Pauillac, one of the world's most prestigious red wine appellations and a true benchmark for Left Bank Bordeaux. The area is characterized by its gravelly soils close to the Gironde estuary, which provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blends, and is home to three of the five First Growths from the historic 1855 classification. The 1983 vintage in this region is described as mature and classic, achieving a score of 86 points.
Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a distinguished 5th Cru Classé estate in Pauillac. It holds a remarkable geographical position, with half of its 30 hectares situated directly adjacent to Château Latour, making it one of the few properties in the appellation to share such close proximity with a First Growth. The estate was originally founded in the 18th century by the Libéral family, who were prominent wine brokers.
In the period of 1982 to 1983, the property was taken over by the Villars-Merlaut family. Today, it is managed by Claire Villars-Lurton, representing the third generation and daughter of Bernadette Villars-Merlaut, as part of the G&C Lurton Estates. Under her leadership, the château has taken a significantly sustainable direction. It has been organically certified since 2019 and achieved biodynamic certification under the Demeter standard in 2022, representing an ambitious modern approach to managing a classified Pauillac estate.
This 1983 Grand Cru Classé en 1855 was bottled at the estate, bearing the traditional "Mis en Bouteilles au Château" designation, and was distributed by the importer Frederiksberg Vinimport A/S.
