Porto Poças 1996
The Porto Poças 1996 is a Late Bottled Vintage port wine produced by Manoel D. Poças Junior in Portugal. Bottled in 2001, this fortified wine carries an alcohol content of 20% and was recognized with a Gold medal at the International Wine Challenge in 2001.
This wine originates from the protected designation of origin (DOC) of Porto, which is exclusively produced in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. Although the wine takes its name from the coastal city of Porto, where it was historically aged and exported, the actual viticulture and vinification take place further inland along the Douro River. Officially demarcated in 1756, the Douro region is one of the world's oldest regulated wine regions and is today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The landscape of the Douro Valley is defined by steep terraces built into the mountainsides, enabling viticulture in the rugged terrain. The soil consists primarily of schist, forcing the vines' roots to search deep for water. Shielded from the Atlantic coastal climate by the Marão mountain range, the region experiences a continental climate with very hot, dry summers and cold winters. These demanding conditions lead to a low harvest yield but produce grapes of high concentration. As is traditional for port wine, the fermentation is stopped by the addition of grape spirit, preserving the natural sugar content of the grapes while raising the alcohol level.
