Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Upper Douro Valley Late Bottled Vintage 1995
The Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Late Bottled Vintage 1995 is a Port wine produced by J. W. Burmester & Ca., Lda. The wine originates from the Upper Douro Valley in northern Portugal, a region demarcated as early as 1756, making it one of the oldest defined wine regions in the world. The grapes are cultivated on steep slate terraces along the Douro River. The Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate, which dates back to the mid-18th century and was acquired by the Burmester family in late 1991, spans over 120 hectares. It is named after its patron, Our Lady of Carmo, to whom the estate's baroque manor-house chapel is dedicated.
Out of the estate's total area, 40 hectares are planted exclusively with vines dedicated to Port wine production. The blend consists primarily of Tinta Roriz, which makes up the majority of the planting, alongside Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional, and Tinto Cão. Tinta Roriz, the Portuguese name for Tempranillo, is widely grown in the Douro, Dão, and Alentejo regions. Tinta Barroca is a traditional Portuguese variety frequently utilized in Port wine production within the Douro, while Touriga Nacional is recognized as a premier Portuguese grape cultivated extensively in both the Douro and Dão.
The 1995 vintage was characterized by highly favorable weather during the flowering and maturation of the vines, creating ideal conditions for a harvest that avoided excessive heat, taking place between September 1st and September 16th. Following the harvest from the sun-bathed slopes, the grapes were foot-trodden and fermented in traditional large granite tanks, known as lagares, located in the estate's modern press-house. From a total estate production of 103,750 liters, a selection of 12,000 liters from the finest vines was chosen for this Late Bottled Vintage, which was subsequently bottled in April 1999.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Douro
The Douro in northern Portugal is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions, delimited as early as 1756. On dizzyingly steep schist terraces along the Douro river, the grapes that yield the famous Port wine ripen. Today, excellent dry red wines are also made from native grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. The wines are deep, concentrated and mineral.
