Premières Côtes de Bordeaux Château Gourran 1989
The 1989 Château Gourran is a classic representation of the Bordeaux region, originating from the historic vineyards near the Atlantic coast. Bordeaux has been a prominent wine exporter since the Middle Ages, with its vineyards traditionally divided between the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated left bank and the Merlot and Cabernet Franc-focused right bank. The 1989 vintage in this area achieved a score of 96 points and is characterized as full-bodied and concentrated.
This wine comes from the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, a narrow, 60-kilometer belt situated along the right bank of the Garonne river, stretching from Bassens south to Saint-Maixant. The vineyards are planted on well-drained slopes directly facing the renowned Graves and Sauternes areas on the opposite bank. The maritime, temperate climate is stabilized by the proximity to the river, while the varied terroir consists predominantly of clay, limestone, gravel, and marl. Officially established in 1937, the appellation originally covered both red and white wines. Although a 2009 restructuring reserved the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux name exclusively for sweet white wines, older releases like this 1989 vintage were produced under the original classification.
Château Gourran traces its origins back to 1773. At the time of this 1989 release, the estate was under the ownership of Kaare Thal-Jantzen, and the wine was bottled directly at the château. Located south of Bordeaux city in what is now known as Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, the estate maintains a unique profile. The property spans just 8 hectares, allowing for a small, artisanal operation rather than a large commercial enterprise. Since 2018, the château has been owned by Lars and Trine Birch, representing a rare Danish presence in French wine culture and bringing new ambitions to an area that historically lived in the shadow of Médoc and Saint-Émilion.

Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
