Bordeaux, situated along the Atlantic coast, is globally recognized for its historic wine production and exports dating back to the Middle Ages. Within this prestigious region, the Right Bank is the traditional domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Puisseguin Saint-Émilion is one of the four satellite AOCs surrounding the famous Saint-Émilion appellation in the Libournais district. Granted AOC status in 1936, the area covers approximately 740 hectares of vineyards planted around the village of Puisseguin. It is known as a quality-oriented satellite and an accessible source of Right Bank Bordeaux wines.
The climate in Puisseguin Saint-Émilion is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and moderated by the waters of the Dordogne river, providing mild temperatures and suitable humidity. The vineyards are situated on higher slopes with well-draining soils consisting primarily of limestone and clay, along with asteries limestone in certain parcels. These conditions are highly favorable for Merlot, which dominates the area's red wine production, typically accounting for 70 to 85 percent of the plantings. The Merlot is traditionally supplemented by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a smaller proportion of Malbec.
