Régnié Georges Dubœuf 1998
Georges Dubœuf established his wine merchant business in Romanèche-Thorins in 1964, eventually becoming the most influential individual in modern Beaujolais history. He was instrumental in bringing international visibility to the region and its Gamay-based wines, transforming the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau into a global phenomenon. Today, following his passing in 2020, the house is managed by his son, Franck Dubœuf. The estate works across the entire Beaujolais spectrum, from generic regional wines to the ten Cru appellations.
This 1998 vintage is an Appellation Régnié Contrôlée red wine. Régnié is located in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, situated south of Burgundy. It is the youngest of the ten recognized Beaujolais Crus, having achieved its official AOC status in 1988. The appellation primarily covers the municipalities of Régnié-Durette and Lantignié, positioned between the neighboring crus of Brouilly and Morgon. A visual hallmark of the area is the local church in Régnié-Durette, designed by architect Pierre Bossan in 1867, which features two characteristic steeples towering over the surrounding landscape.
The vineyards of Régnié are planted on gentle slopes at an average altitude of 350 meters above sea level, predominantly facing southeast towards the Saône river plain. The terroir is characterized by well-drained, shallow soils dominated by pink granite, sand, and gravel. This mineral-rich ground provides optimal growing conditions for Gamay, a French grape variety that is the sole permitted grape for the area's red wines and is widely cultivated across the Beaujolais and Loire regions. The wine was bottled in France by Les Vins Georges Dubœuf and has an alcohol content of 12.5%.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
