Réserve des Proprietaires Côtes de Bordeaux Château de Haux 2012
Château de Haux is situated in the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, on the right bank of the Garonne River, south of the city of Bordeaux. Historically, this area has lived in the shadow of Médoc and Saint-Émilion, but in modern times, several family-owned estates have built serious quality ambitions. Château de Haux holds a unique position in the region's landscape, having been owned by the Danish Jørgensen family since 1989. This rare constellation makes it one of the few classic Bordeaux châteaux with direct Danish ownership spanning over three decades. The estate encompasses 50 hectares, producing both red and white wines. The red wines from the château are typically crafted in the classic right-bank tradition, utilizing a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The 2012 Réserve des Propriétaires is a red wine bottled directly at the château, carrying the Appellation Côtes de Bordeaux Contrôlée designation and an alcohol volume of 13%.
The broader Côtes de Bordeaux appellation was established in 2009, uniting several historical sub-regions along the right banks of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, as well as the Gironde estuary. The name "côtes" refers to the area's hilly topography, which provides the vineyards with optimal sun exposure, often on south- or southeast-facing slopes. The temperate maritime climate is naturally regulated by the large rivers, creating ideal microclimates for viticulture. The soil is predominantly a mix of clay and limestone, with some gravel and sand ensuring good drainage. Merlot is the dominant grape variety here, thriving in the clay-rich soils. The 2012 vintage in this renowned region, which has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages, achieved a score of 89 points and is described as light and balanced.
