Carta de Oro Rioja Berberana 1966
The Carta de Oro 1966 is a red wine produced by Bodegas Berberana under the Denominación de Origen classification in Spain. Don Miguel Martínez Berberana founded the winery in 1877 in Ollauri, a small mountain town in the Rioja Alta subregion. He belonged to the first pioneering generation of Rioja estates that shaped the modern identity of Spanish wine during the late 19th century, heavily inspired by French winemakers who had fled the phylloxera epidemic in Bordeaux. This specific vintage was produced while the winery was still operating out of its original facilities in Ollauri, before production moved to Cenicero in 1975 as part of the region's general post-war expansion.
Located in northern Spain, the Rioja region stretches along the Ebro river valley across La Rioja, the Basque Country, and Navarra. The vineyards are geographically protected by the Cantabrian Mountains to the north, which shield them from cold and wet Atlantic winds, and the Demanda mountain range to the south. The area is divided into three distinct subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental. The climate transitions from a cooler, Atlantic influence in the higher western zones to a warmer, drier Mediterranean climate in the east. The diverse soils consist primarily of calcareous clay, ferrous clay, and alluvial deposits with river stones in the valley floor. The 1966 vintage in this historic region achieved a score of 85 points and is described as mature and structured.
As Spain's most historic wine region, Rioja holds the country's highest quality classification. The area is renowned for its long-standing tradition of oak barrel aging, a practice that defines its classic red wines. The foundation of these wines is typically the Tempranillo grape, which is frequently blended with local varieties such as Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo. While Berberana's portfolio today has grown to include wines from Vino de la Tierra de Castilla and DO Catalunya, the estate's name remains deeply rooted in the history and geographical diversity of Spanish winemaking.

Rioja
Rioja in northern Spain is the country's most famous wine region with a modern wine history shaped by French winemakers in the 19th century.
