Rioja Crianza El Coto de Rioja 2001
The 2001 Rioja Crianza is a red wine produced by El Coto de Rioja, S.A. in northern Spain. This release comes from a year recognized as a top vintage, described as classic and structured, which has achieved a score of 94 points.
Rioja is Spain's most famous and historic wine region, holding the country's highest quality classification, DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada). Its modern winemaking history was significantly shaped by French winemakers in the 19th century. The region stretches along the Ebro river valley and is geographically protected by the Cantabrian Mountains to the north and the Demanda mountain range to the south. The appellation is divided into three distinct subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental. The climate transitions from a cooler, Atlantic influence in the higher western zones to a warmer Mediterranean climate in the east, with diverse soils consisting of calcareous clay, ferrous clay, and alluvial deposits.
This Crianza is made from Tempranillo, Spain's primary grape variety, which is widely cultivated in regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero, as well as in California. For this particular wine, El Coto de Rioja selected Tempranillo grapes sourced from all three subregions of the Rioja DOCa. During the winemaking process, vinification temperatures and times were carefully controlled to optimize color extraction. Following Rioja's long-standing tradition of oak maturation, the wine was aged in American oak casks before undergoing further maturation in the bottle.
