Banda Azul Rioja Paternina 2001
The Banda Azul Crianza 2001 is a classic red wine from Bodegas Paternina, originating from the renowned Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) Rioja in northern Spain.
Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region, with a modern winemaking history heavily influenced by French vintners during the 19th century. The region's production is traditionally defined by its oak aging methods, categorized into classifications such as Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. The 2001 vintage in this area achieved a score of 94 points and is recognized as a top vintage, described as classic and structured.
Federico de Paternina y Josué founded Bodegas Federico Paternina in 1896 in Ollauri, a small mountain town in Rioja Alta that served as one of the original pioneering locations for modern Spanish wine production. The winery was later moved to Haro, which became the commercial center of Rioja throughout the 20th century. The estate has experienced a turbulent ownership history, typical of large traditional Rioja houses. It was owned by the major Spanish bank Banco Santander in the 1980s, later taken over by Marcos Eguizábal—whose signature appears on this bottle—and eventually sold to the Faustino group in 2014.
The 'Banda Azul' has been one of Rioja's most widespread and accessible wines for decades, representing a deep historical lineage from the pioneering period in Ollauri to modern times. As the producer notes on the label, the wine embodies the first wine of Paternina in the 19th century, its evolution in the 20th century, and the fruit of tradition in the 21st century.
