Ripe white Burgundy - Tasting box
Mature white Burgundy – three historic Chardonnay wines
Experience a completely different side of Burgundy.
When people talk about old wine, it is often the great red wines that get the attention. But Chardonnay from Burgundy can develop an at least equally fascinating complexity with age.
In this tasting case, we have gathered three mature white wines from 1990, 1991, and 1992. From Mâcon in southern Burgundy to Meursault in Côte de Beaune, you get the opportunity to experience three historic interpretations of Chardonnay, all of which have had more than 30 years to develop in bottle.
The case contains:
Mâcon-Lugny Louis Latour 1990
The tasting begins in the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy with a Chardonnay from the historic house of Louis Latour.
Mâcon-Lugny is known for a more open and fruit-driven expression than the wines farther north. After more than three decades of bottle aging, the fresh youthful fruit has had the opportunity to develop toward more complex notes of ripe fruit, nuts, honey, and mineral nuances.
Meursault François Martenot 1991
After this, we move north to Côte de Beaune and Meursault – one of the world’s most famous areas for Chardonnay.
Meursault is traditionally associated with fullness, complexity, and a characteristic combination of ripe fruit, nuts, and minerality. The 1991 vintage provides the opportunity to experience how this style develops after more than 30 years in bottle.
Meursault Domaine Bitouzet 1992
The tasting concludes with another Meursault, this time from 1992.
By setting two Meursault wines from almost the same period against each other, it becomes possible to compare not only the vintages, but also the producers’ different expressions of the same appellation.
Expect a mature white wine experience in which the original fruit has developed toward deeper nuances of nuts, wax, dried fruit, honey, and minerality.
Three wines – three vintages – one classic grape
What makes this case special is the opportunity to experience what happens to Chardonnay after more than three decades in bottle.
Start with Mâcon-Lugny 1990 and then move on to two different Meursault wines from 1991 and 1992. In this way, you get both geographical variation and the opportunity to compare two interpretations of one of Burgundy’s most famous white wine appellations.
An ideal tasting case for the Burgundy enthusiast, the Chardonnay lover, or for anyone curious about how great white wines develop over the decades.
