Roero Enrico Serafino 2000
The Roero Enrico Serafino 2000 is a white wine crafted from the Arneis grape. Produced by Enrico Serafino, a historic winery founded in 1878 in Canale, the estate is situated in the heart of the Roero area on the northern side of the Tanaro river. As one of Piedmont's oldest wine houses, its history spans the entire modern era of Italian winemaking. Operating between the Langhe and Roero, the winery is located in one of the most renowned areas for classic Piedmontese wines. Over the 20th century, the estate experienced several ownership changes, including a period under the Krug family of the LVMH group, before being acquired by the American family investor Krause Holdings in 2015.
This 2000 vintage originates from the Piedmont region in northwestern Italy, an area literally translating to "at the foot of the mountain" due to its Alpine borders. Piedmont is globally recognized for its prestigious, terroir-driven viticulture, characterized by dramatic, steep hills that are often blanketed in thick autumn morning fog. This fog plays a crucial role in protecting the vineyards and ensuring a long, steady ripening period. Within Piedmont, the Roero area lies north of Alba on the left bank of the Tanaro river. The sandy soils of Roero provide a distinct terroir that is particularly well-suited for cultivating the local grape varieties.
The wine is made exclusively from Arneis, a green grape variety with deep historical roots in Piedmont, specifically tied to the Roero area where it has been cultivated since the 15th century. Historically, Arneis was often planted alongside red Nebbiolo vines to distract birds from the more valuable red grapes and was sometimes blended to soften red wine tannins. After nearly facing extinction in the mid-20th century, the grape was saved in the 1970s by a dedicated group of local producers. Today, its global plantings remain relatively limited, making it a rare commercial variety. In the local dialect, the name Arneis translates to "rascal," reflecting its demanding nature in the vineyard. It is susceptible to mildew and tends to lose its natural acidity rapidly if left on the vine too long, requiring great precision and careful timing during the harvest.
This release holds the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) classification, reflecting its adherence to the traditional winemaking standards of the Roero Arneis appellation. The wine is bottled at 12.5% alcohol by volume.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
