Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Château Fombrauge 1995
This 1995 Château Fombrauge is a red wine from the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation in Bordeaux, France. Notably, this specific release was bottled to commemorate the wedding of Prince Joachim and Princess Alexandra on November 18, 1995. The 1995 vintage in this region is characterized as mature and balanced, earning a score of 91 points.
Located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, Château Fombrauge spans 58 to 60 hectares, making it the largest Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé estate. This scale is rare in Saint-Émilion, where most classified châteaux are significantly smaller. The estate was officially recognized as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé in the 2012 classification. Since 1999, it has been owned by Bernard Magrez, forming part of his extensive Bordeaux portfolio alongside Château Pape Clément, Château La Tour Carnet, and Château Clos Haut-Peyraguey. Fombrauge stands as his Saint-Émilion flagship, representing a modern and ambitious approach to the classic Right Bank tradition. The wine is bottled directly at the château and is produced without chemical treatments, preserving its natural elements.
The Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation covers the same geographical area as regular Saint-Émilion but enforces stricter production rules, including lower yields of 40 hectoliters per hectare, higher minimum alcohol levels, and a longer aging requirement of 20 months. The area encompasses 5,400 hectares across eight communes surrounding the medieval town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. The terroir consists of a patchwork of limestone plateaus, limestone-clay slopes, gravel, and sandy soils. In this Right Bank domain of Bordeaux, the wines are primarily based on Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Bordeaux itself remains the world's most famous wine region, situated by the Atlantic Ocean and celebrated for its historic blending traditions.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
