Saint Estèphe Château Phélan Ségur 1987
Château Phélan Ségur was founded in 1805 by Bernard Phelan, an Irish merchant who settled in Bordeaux. Located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the estate is classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, a status it achieved in both the 2003 and 2020 classifications. The property encompasses 114 hectares, with 70 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Widely regarded as one of the premier non-1855 classified estates in Saint-Estèphe, the château was owned by the Gardinier family from 1985 until 2017, a period during which its reputation was significantly elevated. In 2017, it was acquired by Belgian businessman Philippe Van de Vyvere for a record-breaking 90 million euros. Since 2010, Véronique Dausse has served as the director, with Michel Rolland acting as a consultant. The estate also produces a second wine, Frank Phelan, which was introduced in 1986.
Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the famous commune appellations in the Médoc, situated just north of Pauillac within the renowned Bordeaux region. The terroir here is distinguished by a higher concentration of clay and limestone compared to neighboring areas. In this part of the Left Bank, Cabernet Sauvignon plays a central role in the vineyards, while Merlot is also an important component of the local viticulture. Bordeaux itself has a rich history of wine exportation dating back to the Middle Ages and remains globally recognized for its historic estates.
This 1987 vintage of Château Phélan Ségur is characterized as a light year. The wine is an Appellation Saint-Estèphe Contrôlée and was bottled directly at the estate, carrying the traditional "Mis en Bouteille au Château" designation. It is presented in a 750 ml bottle with an alcohol volume of 12.5%.
