Saint Julien Grand Cru Classé Château Gruaud Larose 1987
Bordeaux, located on the Atlantic coast, is a historically significant wine region that has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. On the left bank of the Gironde estuary, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the gravel soils, producing elegant blended wines of great finesse. Within the Haut-Médoc, situated between Margaux and Pauillac, lies the small but highly consistent appellation of Saint-Julien. The wines from this area are classic, structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blends. The 1987 vintage in this region is described as light.
Château Gruaud Larose is one of the deepest historical estates in Saint-Julien, founded in 1725 by Abbé Joseph Stanislas Gruaud. The name expanded to include his son-in-law's lineage when Chevalier de Larose was added. The estate was classified as a 2e Cru Classé in the legendary 1855 classification, which still ranks the leading châteaux of the area. The property has experienced a tumultuous ownership history. The Cordier family, whose name appears on the label of this 1987 release as SCPF Désiré Cordier, took over the estate in 1917. Following their era, the château passed through institutional owners such as Suez/La Hénin and Alcatel Alsthom, before the Merlaut family—also known for Bordeaux estates like Citran and Haut-Bages Libéral—assumed ownership in 1997.
The estate cultivates 82 hectares of vines to produce its Grand Cru Classé red wine. Bottled directly at the château, the wine proudly bears the estate's motto, "le roi des vins, le vin des rois," which translates to "the king of wines, the wine of kings." This 1987 release is presented in a 750 ml bottle with an alcohol volume of 12.5%.
