Santa Yecla Familia Castaño 2014
The Santa Yecla Familia Castaño 2014 is a limited edition red wine produced by Familia Castaño, an estate with a long winemaking tradition in southeastern Spain. Classified under the Denominación de Origen, this wine originates from Yecla, a small appellation located in the northernmost part of the Murcia region.
Yecla is unique as one of Spain's smallest DOs, with its entire area situated within a single municipality, encompassing 314 growers and nine wineries. The region features a transitional climate between Mediterranean and continental, characterized by hot, dry summers, cold winters, and minimal annual rainfall. The vineyards benefit from significant diurnal temperature shifts, moderated by their high-altitude location ranging from 535 to 870 meters above sea level. The deep, permeable limestone soils provide excellent drainage, creating an ideal environment for the local vines.
This 2014 vintage is a blend of the indigenous Monastrell and Garnacha Tintorera grapes. Yecla is traditionally recognized as the homeland of Monastrell in Spain, where the variety accounts for the vast majority of the local plantings. The Garnacha Tintorera, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is a distinctive red-fleshed grape frequently found in Spain and Southern France. For this wine, the grapes are carefully selected from old, unirrigated vines planted at high altitudes. The wine is bottled untreated, and it is presented at 14.5% alcohol.
