Seña Seña 1997
The 1997 Seña is the result of a historic partnership established in 1995 between the Chilean Chadwick family of Viña Errázuriz and the American wine icon Robert Mondavi. As noted on the bottle, which bears the signatures of both Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi, the project represents an alliance of two families dedicated to capturing the spirit of Chile, its land, and a shared passion for excellence. Produced and bottled by V.E.S.A., this vintage is presented with an alcohol content of 13.5%.
Viña Errázuriz was originally founded in 1870 by the Chilean diplomat and businessman Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso. Located in Panquehue, north of Santiago, it was one of Chile's earliest modern wine projects, built on the ambition to produce wines of a European standard in an era dominated by local household production. The estate has remained under family control for five generations. Under the current presidency of Eduardo Chadwick, the house has reached international acclaim, a status cemented during the 2004 Berlin Tasting where Chadwick's wines famously triumphed over classic French and Italian estates in a blind tasting.
The wine originates from the Aconcagua Valley, an official Chilean Denominación de Origen (DO) located approximately 100 kilometers north of Santiago. The valley spans from the Andes Mountains in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. It benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm days, cool nights, and significant diurnal temperature shifts. The local terroir features a diverse range of soils, from alluvial gravel and sand to limestone and clay, creating an ideal environment for cultivating prominent grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Aconcagua Valley
Aconcagua Valley lies in central Chile about 100 kilometres north of Santiago and stretches from the Andes in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. The area is an official Chilean DO and is especially known for its powerful red wines from the warmer inland zones and fresh white wines from the cool coastal zones such as Aconcagua Costa.
The climate is Mediterranean with warm days, cool nights and significant diurnal temperature swings, and the soils range from alluvial gravel and sand to limestone and clay. The wines are made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, and the style is typically full-bodied and structured with ripe dark berries, plum, pepper, spices and firm tannins. The area is known as home to some of Chile's most iconic wineries and quality-focused red wines.
