The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Somlo
Somló is Hungary's smallest historical wine region and is located in the western part of the country, north of Lake Balaton in Transdanubia. The area is centered around the Somló hill, which is an extinct volcano that rises prominently from the surrounding flat landscape. The vineyards are laid out on the steep slopes of the volcano, where they benefit from the various sun exposures.
The climate in the region is moderate continental and often windy, but with many sunshine hours that ensure the ripening of the grapes. The soil is deeply influenced by the area's volcanic past and consists primarily of basalt and volcanic tuff mixed with loess, clay, and sand. This particular geological composition is one of the most defining features of the region's terroir.
The wine tradition in Somló dates back to Roman times and has historically enjoyed great recognition, including at the Habsburg court. The region is almost exclusively dedicated to the production of white wine, and local grape varieties such as Juhfark, Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Olaszrizling are especially cultivated, as well as, to a lesser extent, varieties like Muskat-Ottonel. Traditionally, the wines from Somló have been produced with aging in oak barrels, and in earlier times the area's wines were so highly regarded that they were sold in pharmacies for their presumed healing properties.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
