Spätburgunder Meyer-Näkel 2003
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Ahr
The Ahr lies in the western part of Germany along the river Ahr south-west of Bonn and is one of the country's northernmost wine regions. The area covers around 560 hectares spread across steep slate slopes up to 300 metres in altitude, where the mild microclimate of the narrow river valley makes grape growing possible.
The area specialises in red wine, with over 85 percent of plantings devoted to Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), supplemented by Frühburgunder and Portugieser. The soils consist of slate, volcanic greywacke and loess, giving the wines a pronounced minerality. The style is typically slender and elegant with high acidity and fine tannins, along with aromas of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, spices, smoky slate character and light undergrowth. The area is known as Germany's most specialised Pinot Noir region.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
