Luján de Cuyo Reserva Norton 1997
This red wine from the 1997 vintage is a Reserva produced by Bodega Norton. The winery was founded in 1895 by Sir Edmundo James Palmer Norton and is today owned by the Austrian Langes Swarovski family. The wine is made from a blend of the Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and it is bottled directly at the winery.
The grapes come from Luján de Cuyo, which is located south of the city of Mendoza and constitutes one of Argentina's historic core areas for wine production. Bodega Norton's vineyards are specifically located in the higher-lying part of the area, known as Zona Alta del Rio Mendoza. The Mendoza region is situated at the foot of the Andes Mountains, where the vineyards at the high elevations are irrigated by meltwater from the mountains. The sunny highland climate combined with the cool nights creates the special conditions for growing the grapes for this wine, which has an alcohol content of 13.5 %.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Mendoza
Mendoza at the foot of the Andes is Argentina's wine heart and accounts for the majority of the country's production. At high altitude, where meltwater from the mountains irrigates the fields, Malbec thrives above all. The grape produces deep, velvety red wines with ripe dark berries, plum and violets. The sunny highland climate and cool nights give colour, concentration and freshness.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
