Eminence Vin de Pays d'Oc Reserve 2012
The Eminence Reserve 2012 is a red wine produced by Joseph Castan under the Indication Géographique Protégée classification. It originates from the Pays d'Oc area within the Languedoc region of southern France. Stretching along the Mediterranean coast from the Rhône Valley to the Catalan border, Languedoc is France's largest wine region. The Pays d'Oc IGP, established in 1987, covers the entirety of the Languedoc-Roussillon area and stands as the dominant and largest IGP in France, producing over six million hectoliters annually.
The vines for this wine are cultivated on the clay-limestone slopes of western Languedoc. The region benefits from a distinct Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers, mild winters, and over 300 days of sunshine each year. These conditions are moderated by cooling sea breezes from the Mediterranean and the dry, northwesterly Tramontane wind. The diverse soils of the area, ranging from coastal alluvial deposits to limestone, clay, schist, and granite, provide an ideal environment for viticulture.
This wine is made exclusively from Syrah, a dark-skinned grape variety that is prominently grown in regions such as the Rhône Valley, Australia, California, and Washington. The winemaking process follows traditional methods, beginning with a two-week maceration period. During fermentation, which is carefully temperature-controlled to remain under 28°C, extraction is performed gently. The 2012 vintage of this wine was recognized with gold medals at the Concours International de Lyon, the Foire Exposition de Brignoles, and the Concours National des Vins IGP de France.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Languedoc
Languedoc lies along the Mediterranean coast in southern France from the Rhône Valley in the east to the Catalan border in the south and, together with Roussillon, forms France's largest wine region. The area contains 23 official AOCs, including Languedoc AOC, Corbières, Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Picpoul de Pinet, as well as Limoux and Blanquette de Limoux for sparkling wines.
The climate is distinctly Mediterranean with warm dry summers, mild winters and over 300 days of sunshine a year, and the soils range from limestone and clay to slate, granite and gravel. The red wines are made predominantly from Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, while the whites are dominated by Picpoul, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Vermentino and Viognier. The style of the reds is typically spicy and full-bodied with ripe dark berries, garrigue herbs, liquorice, pepper and soft tannins, while the whites have citrus, peach, herbs and a saline minerality. The area is known as home to about a third of France's total wine production and holds the country's largest concentration of organic vineyards.
