Trento L·Todesca 1967
The 1967 Trento L·Todesca is a red wine produced by Azienda Vinicola L·Todesca in Trento. Hailing from the mountainous terrains of northern Italy, this wine is crafted from the Teroldego grape, reflecting a region deeply rooted in alpine viticulture.
Teroldego is an ancient, dark-skinned grape variety with its primary origin and cultivation in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, where it has been grown since the Middle Ages. Historical documents trace its presence back to the 13th and 15th centuries. The name is believed to derive either from an old village named Teroldege or from the dialect term Tiroldego, translating to Tyrol's gold. Genetic studies reveal that Teroldego is a parent to the local Lagrein grape and a full sibling to the French Dureza, an ancestor of Syrah. Today, it is cultivated almost exclusively in Italy, thriving particularly on the Campo Rotaliano, a gravelly, alluvial plain formed by the Adige and Noce rivers. The vines are traditionally trained using the local pergola system, which protects the grapes from direct sunlight and ensures proper ventilation in the alpine climate.
The Trentino-Alto Adige region is characterized by its alpine landscape, where vineyards are nestled between mountains, valleys, and cool altitudes. The southern part, Trentino, is heavily influenced by the Alps, though the climate is moderated by the Adige river valley and nearby lakes. The area experiences warm days and cool nights, with significant diurnal temperature shifts. Vineyards in the Trento area are often planted on terraced mountain slopes at elevations ranging from 200 to 900 meters. The local soils are highly diverse, consisting of moraine gravel, limestone, volcanic porphyry, and clay, providing a distinct foundation for the region's viticulture.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Trentino Alto Adige
Trentino Alto Adige is an alpine-influenced wine region in northern Italy, where the vineyards lie among mountains, valleys and cool altitudes. The region effectively comprises two distinct wine identities: Trentino to the south and Alto Adige, or Südtirol, to the north. Trentino is especially known for Trento DOC, sparkling wine made by the classic method, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Teroldego and Marzemino. Alto Adige is known for elegant, fresh and aromatic wines from Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, Schiava, Lagrein and Pinot Nero. The cool climate, the great differences in altitude and the limestone, porphyry and stony soils give wines with high freshness, pure fruit and clear precision. The region is known for alpine wines with balance, elegance and a strong local identity.
