Gran Copos Terra Alta Reserva 1996
The Gran Copos Terra Alta Reserva is a red wine produced by Cellers Unio. This release from the 1996 vintage holds the Denominación de Origen Reserva classification. As part of the production process, the wine was aged in both barrels and bottles prior to its release.
The wine is crafted from Tempranillo, recognized as Spain's primary grape variety. While Tempranillo is most frequently associated with regions such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero, as well as international plantings in California, it is also successfully cultivated in the Catalan vineyards.
The grapes are sourced from Terra Alta, a Denominación de Origen located in the southwestern part of Catalonia within the Tarragona province. Situated on a high plateau at an elevation of 300 to 500 meters, the area lies between the Ebro River and the Beceite mountains, bordering Aragón. Terra Alta gained its DO status in 1972 and encompasses approximately 6,000 hectares of vineyards spread across 12 municipalities, with Gandesa serving as its main center. While the area is globally renowned for its Garnacha Blanca, the vineyards also support red varieties like Tempranillo.
The local climate is a transition between Mediterranean and continental, characterized by hot, dry summers, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variations. The vineyards are shaped by two distinct winds: the warm, dry Cierzo from the northwest and the humid Garbí from the Mediterranean. The vines grow in stony soils of low fertility, consisting primarily of limestone and clay over a limestone bedrock.
Terra Alta is part of the broader Catalonia region, which stretches along the Mediterranean coast from the Pyrenees in the north to Tarragona in the south. Catalonia is one of Spain's most dynamic wine-producing areas, home to ten official DOs and the prestigious DOQ Priorat. The regional climate is predominantly Mediterranean, with continental traits appearing further inland, while the diverse soils range from limestone and clay to slate and granite.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Catalonien
Catalonia lies in north-eastern Spain along the Mediterranean coast from the Pyrenees in the north to Tarragona in the south and, together with Barcelona, forms one of Spain's most dynamic wine regions. The area contains 10 official DOs, including Penedès, Empordà, Costers del Segre, Conca de Barberà, Terra Alta, Montsant, Pla de Bages, Tarragona and Alella, as well as the prestigious DOQ Priorat with Spain's highest quality classification.
The climate is predominantly Mediterranean with continental features inland, and the soils range from limestone and clay to slate (llicorella) and granite. The area is home to Cava, Spain's traditional-method sparkling wine, produced mainly in Penedès from Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada. The red wines are made from Garnacha, Cariñena, Tempranillo and international varieties, while the whites are dominated by the traditional Cava grapes and Chardonnay. The style ranges from fresh sparkling wines to powerful, concentrated reds from Priorat with mineral graphite and ripe dark berries. The area is known as the home of Cava and one of Spain's most diverse wine regions.
