El Albar Toro J. & F. Lurton 2000
The 2000 El Albar is a red wine produced by J. & F. Lurton in the Spanish region of Toro. Drawing on their Bordeaux background, the producers have implemented a combination of modern and traditional production methods tailored to the local terroir. The wine is bottled without filtration.
Toro is a Denominación de Origen (D.O.) located in the northwestern part of Castilla y León, primarily within the Zamora province along the Duero river. The area has a rich viticultural history that predates Roman domination. The climate is distinctly continental with Atlantic influences, characterized by hot summers, cold winters, significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, and low annual rainfall. Vineyards are situated on a plateau between 600 and 800 meters above sea level, featuring stony soils composed of sand and clay.
The wine is made from Tempranillo, Spain's primary grape variety, which is also widely planted in regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and California. In Toro, the local clone known as Tinta de Toro has adapted to the climate by developing thicker skins. The high sand content in the soil has historically protected the area from phylloxera, allowing for the cultivation of very old, ungrafted vines that are traditionally grown as free-standing bushes. The grapes for this wine are sourced from these ancient vines, some of which are over a hundred years old, resulting in naturally low yields where each vine produces only a few bunches.
