Castillo Pastores Valdepeñas Reserva 1995
The Castillo Pastores Valdepeñas Reserva is a red wine from the 1995 vintage, produced for FESOYA, S.A. It originates from the Valdepeñas Denominación de Origen, located on the high Central Meseta in the Castilla-La Mancha region of central Spain.
Situated approximately 200 kilometers south of Madrid, Valdepeñas is one of Spain's historically most important wine regions, with a documented viticultural history dating back to Roman times. It was granted DO status in 1932, making it one of the country's earliest recognized appellations. The area is characterized by a distinct continental climate with very hot, dry summers, cold winters, and low rainfall. These conditions are moderated by the region's high-altitude plateau, sitting at around 700 meters above sea level, which provides significant diurnal temperature variations. The vineyards are primarily planted on well-draining red limestone soils with a high chalk content.
This 1995 Reserva is crafted exclusively from Tempranillo, a principal Spanish grape variety that is widely cultivated in prominent regions such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero, as well as internationally in places like California. In Valdepeñas, the grape is locally known as Cencibel and dominates the red wine plantings. For this specific wine, the producer utilized specially selected, dry-grown Cencibel grapes from the high-altitude vineyards of the Central Meseta. Following the harvest and vinification, the wine was aged for one year in oak barrels.
