Diego de Almagro Valdepeñas Reserva 1993
The Diego de Almagro Reserva is a red wine produced by Felix Solis from the 1993 vintage. It originates from the Valdepeñas Denominación de Origen, located in the Castilla-La Mancha region of central Spain. As a Reserva classification, the wine has undergone a specific production method, which includes aging for one year in American oak barrels.
Situated in the province of Ciudad Real, approximately 200 kilometers south of Madrid, Valdepeñas is one of Spain's most historically significant wine regions, with a documented viticultural history dating back to Roman times. It was granted DO status in 1932, making it one of the country's earliest recognized appellations. The area is situated on a high plateau at an altitude of 700 meters, which helps moderate its distinctively continental climate. The vines endure very hot, dry summers with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variations alongside low rainfall.
The vineyards in Valdepeñas are primarily planted on red calcareous soils with a high calcium content. These well-draining soils are highly favorable for viticulture and contribute to the area's reputation for producing both volume and quality. While the region cultivates several grape varieties, the red wines are predominantly based on Tempranillo, known locally as Cencibel, which is often supplemented by other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
