Diego de Almagro Valdepeñas Reserva 1993
The Diego de Almagro Valdepeñas Reserva 1993 is a red wine produced by Felix Solis. It originates from Valdepeñas, a Denominación de Origen (DO) located in the province of Ciudad Real within the vast Castilla-La Mancha region of central Spain. Recognized as a DO in 1932, Valdepeñas is one of the country's oldest official appellations, with a viticultural history dating back to Roman times.
Castilla-La Mancha is situated on the Iberian plateau and is known as Europe's largest continuous wine-producing area. The vineyards in Valdepeñas sit at an altitude of around 700 meters on flat plains characterized by red limestone soils with excellent drainage. The climate is distinctly continental, featuring extremely hot, dry summers and harsh, cold winters. The significant diurnal temperature shifts and low rainfall create a demanding environment for viticulture, traditionally requiring vines to be planted far apart to maximize the limited moisture in the soil.
Red wine production in this area is heavily dominated by the local variant of Tempranillo, known as Cencibel. While the region was historically known for large-scale production, it has undergone significant modernization with an increased focus on quality winemaking. As a Reserva, this 1993 vintage was aged for one year in American oak barrels, reflecting the traditional production methods utilized by the estate.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Castilla-La Mancha
Castilla-La Mancha is a vast Spanish wine region located on the Iberian plateau in the central and southeastern part of the country. With its enormous area, the region constitutes Europe's largest continuous wine area and is often referred to as the world's largest vineyard. The landscape is characterized by large, flat plains that stretch from Madrid in the north down towards the mountain ranges at Valdepeñas in the south.
The climate in Castilla-La Mancha is extremely continental. The region experiences very hot, dry summers, where temperatures can exceed 40 degrees, and correspondingly harsh, cold winters with frost. The large temperature difference between night and day as well as the very limited rainfall create harsh conditions for viticulture, which has traditionally required the vines to be planted far apart to utilize the sparse moisture in the soil.
Historically, Castilla-La Mancha has been known for large-scale production of wine and distillation of grape spirit, especially based on the widespread white grape Airén. Over the recent decades, however, the region has undergone a significant modernization with an increased focus on quality wines and modern production techniques. The local variant of Tempranillo, known as Cencibel, plays a main role in the production of the region's red wines, and the area contains several recognized appellations such as DO Valdepeñas.
