Diego de Almagro Valdepeñas Gran Reserva 1995
Diego de Almagro Valdepeñas Gran Reserva is a red wine produced by Felix Solis Bodegas. This 1995 vintage is classified as a Denominación de Origen Gran Reserva and is crafted from Tempranillo, Spain's primary grape variety. The production method for this specific wine included two years of barrel aging.
Tempranillo is the dominant grape variety in Spanish viticulture. While it is frequently planted across the country and is highly characteristic of regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero, it has also found a presence internationally in places such as California. In the Valdepeñas region, where it is locally known as Cencibel, it is the primary grape used for red wine production.
Valdepeñas is located in central Spain within the Castilla-La Mancha region, situated on a high plateau approximately 200 kilometers south of Madrid. It is one of Spain's most historically significant wine regions, with a documented viticultural history dating back to Roman times, and it became one of the country's first recognized appellations when it received DO status in 1932. The area features a distinct continental climate with cold winters, low rainfall, and very hot, dry summers. The significant diurnal temperature shifts are moderated by the 700-meter elevation. The vineyards benefit from red calcareous soils with a high limestone content, providing excellent drainage that favors the cultivation of vines.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Valdepeñas
Valdepeñas is a Spanish wine region located in the southern part of Castilla-La Mancha, more specifically in the province of Ciudad Real. The region, whose name literally means "valley of rocks", is almost completely surrounded by the enormous La Mancha appellation, but has its own independent DO status (Denominación de Origen). The vineyards are primarily laid out on a high-altitude plateau about 700 to 800 meters above sea level, where the soil is characterized by limestone, sand, and clay with a high content of stones.
The climate in Valdepeñas is distinctly continental and very dry. The area is known for its extreme temperature fluctuations with scorching hot summers, where the temperature often exceeds 40 degrees, and harsh winters with frost down to minus 10 degrees. The sparse rainfall and the more than 2,500 annual hours of sunshine create harsh conditions for viticulture, as the dry climate naturally keeps the vines free from many diseases and ensures a high concentration in the grapes.
The wine tradition in Valdepeñas stretches back to antiquity, and for centuries the region was the preferred wine supplier to the capital Madrid. The area received its official DO classification as early as 1932, which makes it one of Spain's oldest recognized wine regions. Historically, Valdepeñas was especially known for its light "clarete" wines, but in modern times the region is primarily recognized for its structured and barrel-aged red wines. The dominant grape variety is Tempranillo, which locally goes by the name Cencibel, and which often forms the backbone of the area's classic Reserva and Gran Reserva wines.
