Sardinian Gold Oristano Cantina Sociale Vernaccia 1968
The Sardinian Gold Oristano is a 1968 vintage white wine produced by Cantina Sociale Vernaccia. Originating from the island of Sardinia, Italy, this wine is deeply rooted in a region that stands in stark contrast to the Italian mainland. The island's rugged geography is defined by granite and limestone, with vineyards stretching from the windswept coastlines to the wild, mountainous interior known as Barbagia. Specifically, this wine hails from Oristano, located in the Tirso Valley, and is recognized as a classic representation of the area.
The wine is crafted exclusively from Vernaccia di Oristano, an ancient white grape variety native to the Tirso river valley in western Sardinia. The name likely derives from the Latin word vernaculus, meaning local or native. Archaeological discoveries of grape seeds in the area suggest that this variety, or its ancestors, has been cultivated on the island for millennia. Today, it is grown almost exclusively in the province of Oristano, where it thrives in the sandy and alluvial soils of the river valley. While it formed the basis for Sardinia's first DOC classification in 1971, the total planted area has decreased significantly since the 1970s, dropping from over 1,500 hectares to just a few hundred today.
Vernaccia di Oristano is a thin-skinned, mid-to-late ripening grape that is particularly suited for traditional, oxidative winemaking. During production, the grape must is fermented and stored in oak or chestnut barrels that are intentionally left partially empty. This technique allows a protective layer of flor yeast to develop on the surface of the wine, a central element of the region's historical winemaking method. Bottled at 15.5 percent alcohol in a 72-centiliter format, this specific release is designated as a pale extra dry style.
