Vin de Pays d'Oc Celliers du Colombier 1995
This 1995 red wine is produced by Celliers du Colombier under the Vin de Pays d'Oc classification. Bottled for Louis Vialard, the wine originates from the expansive Languedoc-Roussillon region in southern France, an area stretching along the Mediterranean coast from Nîmes and Montpellier to Perpignan and the Pyrenees.
The Vin de Pays d'Oc, officially recognized as IGP Pays d'Oc since 2009, was established in 1987 and stands as France's largest IGP. It covers the entire Languedoc-Roussillon region, producing over six million hectoliters annually. The area benefits from a distinct Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers, mild winters, and more than 300 days of sunshine each year. These conditions are moderated by sea breezes from the Mediterranean and the characteristic dry, northwestern Tramontane wind. The region features a highly diverse terroir, with soils ranging from coastal alluvial deposits and limestone to clay, schist, granite, and volcanic rocks. The landscape itself is equally varied, encompassing coastal vineyards, warm plains, and cooler hillsides.
This specific wine is made from Merlot, a classic blue grape variety. While Merlot is widely recognized for its prominence in regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy, the flexible regulations of the Pays d'Oc classification allow for a broad spectrum of over 50 different grape varieties. This flexibility has made the area France's most important category for varietally labeled wines. The wine is presented in a standard 75 cl bottle with an alcohol content of 12%.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Languedoc-Roussillon
Languedoc-Roussillon lies in southern France along the Mediterranean, from Nîmes and Montpellier in the east to Perpignan and the Pyrenees in the south-west. The area is one of France's largest and most diverse wine regions, with coastal vineyards, warm plains, cooler mountain slopes and limestone-rich heights. The climate is sunny, warm and dry, often shaped by wind, which gives ripe grapes and healthy vineyards. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan are important black grapes, while Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Vermentino and Picpoul are used for white wine. The wines range from fresh whites and rosé to full-bodied, spicy reds with dark berries, herbs, liquorice, pepper and Mediterranean spices. The area is known for great variety, strong value for money and classic appellations such as Corbières, Minervois, Pic Saint-Loup, Faugères, Saint-Chinian, Fitou, Banyuls and Rivesaltes.
