Montepulciano Baroncini 1989
The Montepulciano Baroncini 1989 is a red wine produced by Baroncini in the iconic Italian wine region of Tuscany. The 1989 vintage achieved a score of 85 points and is characterized by a classic style. This wine holds the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) classification, representing the highest quality tier in Italy. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was notably the first wine in the country to receive this prestigious status in 1980.
Tuscany has a rich wine history that stretches back to the Etruscans. The historical area of Montepulciano is located in the southeastern part of the region, nestled between the Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia valleys. Centered around a medieval hilltop town, the vineyards are planted on slopes at altitudes ranging from 250 to 600 meters above sea level, providing the vines with various sun exposures and microclimates. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean, featuring warm summers and cool nights. This temperature variation, combined with cooling breezes from the surrounding hills and the mild influence of nearby Lake Trasimeno, ensures an even ripening of the grapes. The highly varied soil consists of a complex mixture of clay, sand, limestone, and tuff, where the clay contributes to the structure of the vines, while the sand and limestone ensure excellent drainage.
The backbone of this wine is Sangiovese, the undisputed main grape of Italy, which is widely cultivated in regions such as Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia Romagna, and California. In Montepulciano, this grape is locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. Wines from this area have been produced by the noble families around the town of Montepulciano for hundreds of years, cementing its reputation as one of Tuscany's great historical wines. It is important to note that the Montepulciano region in Tuscany should not be confused with the grape variety of the same name, which is primarily grown in Abruzzo.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
