Vintage Port Burmester 1997
The Porto Vintage Burmester 1997 is a classic Vintage Port from the historic house of Burmester, which was established in 1750. Produced in the renowned Douro region of northern Portugal, this fortified wine was harvested in 1997 and subsequently bottled in 1999. It is presented at 20% alcohol by volume.
The Douro Valley is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world, officially established in 1756, and is today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The landscape is defined by steep terraces built into the mountainsides along the Douro River, allowing for viticulture in a rugged terrain. The soil consists primarily of schist, forcing the vines' roots to dig deep for water. Shielded from the Atlantic coastal climate by the Marão mountain range, the region experiences a continental climate with very hot, dry summers and cold winters. These demanding conditions naturally limit the harvest yield while ensuring a high concentration in the grapes.
Porto, or Vinho do Porto, is the protected designation of origin (DOC) for this fortified wine. The fermentation process is intentionally halted by the addition of grape spirit, which preserves the natural sugar content of the grapes and raises the alcohol level. The wine is crafted from a blend of traditional Portuguese grape varieties native to the area, typically including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Douro
The Douro in northern Portugal is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions, delimited as early as 1756. On dizzyingly steep schist terraces along the Douro river, the grapes that yield the famous Port wine ripen. Today, excellent dry red wines are also made from native grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. The wines are deep, concentrated and mineral.
