Woodthorpe Hawkes Bay Te Mata Estate 2005

The 2005 Woodthorpe Viognier is a white wine produced by Te Mata Estate, a winery that pioneered the cultivation of this grape variety in New Zealand. The wine originates from Woodthorpe, a large single vineyard situated on picturesque river terraces. This specific site holds a unique piece of local history, as it was home to the annual Woodthorpe horse races between 1863 and 1914.

Viognier is an aromatic white grape variety that traces its origins to the Rhône valley in France, and it is also frequently cultivated in regions such as California. While traditionally considered an exotic variety in New Zealand, it has found a solid footing under the care of Te Mata Estate.

About the region

Hawke's Bay is located on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island and is the country's oldest as well as second largest wine region. The area is characterized by a warm, maritime climate with many hours of sunshine and a long growing season, which is protected by inland mountain ranges. The geography offers a great diversity of soils, ranging from coastal silt soils and limestone hills to river valleys and the famous alluvial gravel deposits, including the renowned sub-region Gimblett Gravels.

The region's wine history stretches back to 1851, when French Marist missionaries planted the first vines. Since then, Hawke's Bay has developed into one of New Zealand's most significant areas for wine production. In contrast to many of the country's cooler regions, the warmer climate here provides optimal conditions for ripening grapes that require more heat.

The wine tradition in Hawke's Bay is especially centered around the production of red wines and full-bodied white wines. The region is widely recognized as New Zealand's center for Bordeaux-inspired wines, where grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon play a main role. In addition, the area has achieved great recognition for its wines based on Syrah as well as white wines made from Chardonnay.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
