Cuvée Gauvain Volnay Hospices de Beaune 1984
This red wine is the 1984 Cuvée Gauvain, an Appellation Volnay-Santenots Contrôlée from the renowned Hospices de Beaune. It originates from the Burgundy region in eastern France, an area shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped its countless terroirs. The limestone soils of Burgundy, stretching from Chablis in the north to the Côte d'Or and Mâconnais in the south, are famous for producing highly sought-after wines through a finely meshed system of climats. The 1984 vintage in this region is historically noted as a very weak vintage.
The wine is crafted entirely from Pinot Noir, an elegant blue grape that is deeply rooted in Burgundy, though it is also widely cultivated in regions like Champagne, Germany, Oregon, and California. The grapes for this cuvée are sourced from Volnay-Santenots. Volnay is situated in the Côte de Beaune between Pommard and Meursault, standing as a classic area for Pinot Noir. While Volnay does not have any Grand Cru vineyards, it boasts many highly respected Premier Cru sites.
Hospices de Beaune is not a traditional private winery, but a historic charitable institution founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins. Originally established as a hospital for the poor, its central building, the Hôtel-Dieu, remains a prominent landmark in the heart of Beaune. Over nearly 600 years, the institution has amassed a remarkable portfolio of around 60 hectares of vineyards—predominantly classified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru—through generous donations. The highlight of the estate is its annual charity wine auction, the oldest of its kind in the world, held every third Sunday of November during the Les Trois Glorieuses festival. As is customary for the Hospices de Beaune, the wines are sold in barrels at a famous candlelight auction. The buyers then take on the responsibility of maturing and bottling the wine. For this specific 1984 cuvée, the bottling was entrusted to Bertrand de Monceny.
