Give a personal gift with a wine from 1985

A taste experience with 40 years of history

Where in their youth they were characterized by fresh, intense fruit notes, today they present a complex and elegant profile with nuances of dried fruits and ripe spices. Over the years, the tannins have become wonderfully soft and velvety, giving a very harmonious and silky texture in the mouth, while the color has often taken on a characteristic brick red edge.

The vintage's selection offers a lovely variety in styles, and both the dark and light drops have shown a remarkable ability to age gracefully; like our wine from the 1995 collection often do.

At the same time, white wines and champagnes from this year have gone from being tight and acidic in their youth, to today appearing rich, creamy and invitingly complex with delicate notes of roasted nuts, honey and brioche. Although the quantity of grapes was small due to the early frosts of the year, the concentration in the must was towering, which can be clearly tasted today in the incredible depth of the wine.

The importance of storage for quality

In order for a bottle to maintain its high quality over four decades, it is absolutely essential that it has been stored under optimal and stable conditions — this also applies to older bottles such as wine from 1975. A constant temperature combined with the right humidity ensures that the natural development of the wine can proceed at a slow and controlled pace.

When the wine is allowed to lie in the dark and quiet, it gives the phenols and pigments the opportunity to slowly bind together and fall to the bottom as a natural precipitate. At the same time, the correct conditions ensure that the cork is kept intact, so that the wine is protected from outside oxygen, right up until the special day when the bottle is finally to be enjoyed.

Historic producers behind 1985 great wines

Through a harmonious combination of traditional craftsmanship and emerging modern temperature control, they managed to take full advantage of the hot summer. Her er et overblik over nogle af de fremtrædende stilarter fra årgangen:

  • Large champagne houses impressed with their prestige cuvées, which with a high proportion of Chardonnay have developed into full-bodied and complex wines with notes of roasted hazelnuts.

  • Traditional producers in Piedmont created structured and incredibly complex Barolo wines, where the heat of the year produced intense aromas of tar, ripe fruit and dried flowers.

  • Bordeaux châteaux in Pomerol and Médoc in particular delivered some of the decade's most elegant and seductive red wines with soft tannins and distinct notes of blackcurrant, cedar and graphite.

  • Vineyards in Tuscany experienced a legendary harvest, where the famous and powerful wines of international stature really cemented their status with enormous depth and aging potential.

  • Burgundy producers produced extremely balanced wines, where the Pinot Noir grapes have developed over time a silky texture and flattering aromas of raspberry, violets and forest floor.

FAQ

Wine from 1985 now tastes mature and complex, often with notes of dried fruit, tobacco, cedar, leather, forest floor and subtle spices. The tannins are soft and silky. Many bottles are at or just past their peak, so plan to enjoy them soon. They contain sulphites.
Yes, many 1985 wines are ready to drink, but they are delicate. Decant gently for 15–30 minutes mainly to remove sediment; avoid long exposure to air, especially for Burgundy and older Champagne. Serve at about 16–18°C (red), 12–14°C (white) and 10–12°C (Champagne).
Start with the recipient’s taste and the occasion. A red 1985 offers depth and reflection; 1985 Champagne is celebratory and can still be lively; whites are more evolved and suited to experienced wine lovers. Choose bottles with proven storage, good condition and a story that fits the event.
Proper cellaring (a steady 12–16°C, 60–70% humidity, darkness) preserves the fill level of 1985 wines, slows oxidation and allows a silky texture and tertiary aromas to develop. Fluctuating temperatures can cause browning and vinegary notes. At Bottles With History, the bottles have been stored under optimal conditions.
Check for a high fill level and a clean cork/capsule. Reds often show garnet hues with a brick-coloured rim; whites tend towards golden/amber tones. Sediment is normal and a sign of maturity. Avoid bottles with a brownish colour, leakage or smells of damp cardboard or ‘cooked’ fruit.
