Kies een jaargang met persoonlijke betekenis – meestal het jaar waarin de studie begon of het afstudeerjaar. Stem daarna de stijl af op de smaak van de ontvanger (krachtig vs. verfijnd) en gebruik jaargangstabellen om de kwaliteit van het jaar te controleren. Geef de voorkeur aan flessen die goed bewaard zijn en drinkklaar zijn voor de viering zelf.
Ga voor gerijpte, goed bewaren flessen uit bewezen goede bewaarklimaat: vintage Champagne voor een directe toost, Rioja Gran Reserva of klassieke Bordeaux/Barolo met 10–25 jaar leeftijd voor diepgang en zachtere tannines. Schenk voorzichtig, bij voorkeur na een lichte decantering om het bezinksel te verwijderen.

Het fungeert als een vloeibare tijdcapsule: het jaartal sluit direct aan bij de reis van de ontvanger en de rijping van de wijn weerspiegelt zijn of haar eigen ontwikkeling. Een gerijpte fles zorgt voor gespreksstof aan tafel, verheft het proosten en biedt een zintuiglijke, historische ervaring die verder gaat dan het cadeau zelf.
Let op een goede vulhoogte en een intacte kurk/capsule, en kies alleen flessen waarvan de correcte opslag aantoonbaar is. Laat de fles 24–48 uur rechtop staan voor het openen, open voorzichtig, decanteer zachtjes om het bezinksel te scheiden en serveer bij ongeveer 16–18 °C (rood) of 8–10 °C (mousserend).
